Plumbing in North Sydney
North Sydney was subdivided for terraces from the 1860s onwards, and that single fact decides most plumbing here. Party walls on both sides mean there is no path to the rear of the property, so every tool and every replacement unit comes through the front door. Add ground that falls hard toward the harbour and you get lower levels sitting below the sewer main. From Kirribilli and Milsons Point through McMahons Point and Waverton, a licensed local plumber is minutes away, same-day and 24 hours for genuine emergencies.
Common plumbing problems we see in North Sydney
Reactive-clay pipe cracks. There is no side passage in a terrace, so a machine cannot reach the rear and the drain often runs under original flooring. Excavation here is frequently impossible rather than merely expensive.
Hot water systems giving out. Sydney's water is soft, so a dead unit here is usually a spent anode or element, not scale. We repair or replace gas, electric, heat-pump and solar, often same day.
Ageing galvanised & earthenware pipe. Older homes in Milsons Point, Waverton and Waverton still run on steel and clay pipe that rusts, roots and splits over time.

My hot water system failed and it isn't that old. Why?
Sydney's water is soft, so unlike harder-water cities it's rarely limescale that kills a unit here. Usually it's a spent sacrificial anode or a failed element, which we can often repair. We'll tell you whether a repair or a replacement is the smarter spend before touching it.
My pipes and drains keep cracking. Is it the ground?
Very likely. Much of North Sydney sits on Less often than out west. Stable ground here means joints open from age and roots rather than soil movement. What decides the repair is access: in a terrace there is no way to get a machine to the pipe at all, which is why we reline rather than dig.
Do you work on heritage and conservation-area homes?
Yes, and it is most of what we do. These streets carry conservation areas and terraces dating from the 1860s. We work within what that housing allows: no side access, original floors, narrow rough-ins and century-old earthenware, without cutting corners or marking the place up.
My terrace shares a drain with next door. Whose problem is it?
It depends where the fault sits, not whose fixture noticed first. Shared and boundary drains are normal in housing of this age, and the camera is what establishes the position. We hand over the footage and a written finding, because a conversation with a neighbour goes very differently with evidence than with two opinions.
